CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — A former police officer faces up to nine years in prison after admitting he drove drunk the wrong way on a highway and killed a man in a crash.

Robert Scheuerer, a former Suffolk County police officer on Long Island, pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated vehicular homicide in the September 2016 crash.

Scheuerer crashed into an oncoming van on Sunrise Highway, killing the driver.

Newsday reports state Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho promised to sentence the 26-year-old Scheuerer to 3 to 9 years in prison. He could have faced a maximum of 8 1?3 to 25 years if convicted at trial.

Defense attorney William Petrillo says his client "is as remorseful as one can be."

He was fired after he was indicted.
