PHILADELPHIA (AP) — James Demery scored 19 points with 10 rebounds, Shavar Newkirk also had 19 points and Saint Joseph's turned back Maine 72-59 on Sunday in the first meeting between the schools.
The Owls (5-5) scored 18 points off 17 Maine turnovers and only gave the ball away three times, their fewest of the season.
Isaiah White had five 3-pointers and 21 points for Maine (3-9). Aaron Calixte added 14 points, Ilker Er had 13 and Andrew Fleming grabbed 11 boards.
Saint Joseph's quickly stretched a 30-27 halftime lead to 12 points as Newkirk and Pierfrancesco Oliva knocked down 3-pointers. The Black Bears were never able to mount a run and failed to get to the foul line, going 2 for 2 for the game.
Temple ended a two-game losing streak after falling to Big Five rivals Villanova and Temple.
