SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A heavy bell that was on the USS Utah when it sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor has returned to the University of Utah.
The bell was placed inside the campus' Naval Science building on Thursday, the 76th anniversary of the attack.
The bell was retrieved from the ship during the 1940s and had been kept on the quarter deck of the U.S. Naval Station at Pearl Harbor until the 1960s. It was shipped to the University of Utah in 1965 and stayed there until last year, when it was shipped to Rhode Island to be displayed at the Naval War College's Senior Enlisted Academy.
"U.S.S. Utah" is engraved into the bell, with the year 1911 imprinted underneath.
