SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The slumping economy is affecting Utah's horses, too.

Utah State University equine specialist Patricia Evans says people that have been responsible horse owners are having a hard time paying their bills. And some can't afford to continue caring for the animals.

Evans says rescue groups have seen an increase in unwanted and abandoned horses and space at shelters is limited.

The Utah Animal Adoption Center is renovating 10 acres that were donated and plans to house 30 horses that are being fostered across the Wasatch Front.
