What started as a carjacking in West Valley City ended with police shooting and killing a man. It happened this afternoon near 1800 West and 3300 South.
Officers from West Valley, Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County responded to a call that three people had carjacked a man.
When they arrived the suspects took off, but police cornered the vehicle near 1300 West and 2300 South.
Authorities ordered everyone in the car to get out. Two of the suspects followed the officers' order, but one refused to get out of the car.
"The individual that remained in the vehicle, I don't know what precipitated the shooting, but obviously there was some kind of action that precipitated it, officers fired," said West Valley police Capt. Tom McLachalan.
One area resident says she had to get out of the way to avoid being hit by the speeding cars. "All of a sudden, you could hear all these sirens. I saw a vehicle with two cop cars behind it come down this street so fast it was like a blur," Mary Ferney said.
Another resident says he ducked for cover when he heard what he counted as 8 to 12 gunshots. "When I first heard the gunshots, I ducked back behind the fence. I wasn't ready for something like that. I wasn't ready for what was going on when I first walked up," Patrick Day said.
Police aren't saying who shot who first or how many shots were fired. But they do say officers from multiple agencies used their guns.
The other two suspects are in police custody.
