WEST JORDAN, Utah (AP) -- A man who randomly killed another man with a meat cleaver and a knife has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
David Lawrence Berry pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court in July to first-degree felony murder for the slaying of Isidro Cano in August 2007. He was sentenced on Wednesday and apologized to Cano's family.
Ramona Cano said she and her father-in-law were painting the outside of a Taylorsville home when Berry walked up to them and said he wanted to kill someone. Berry then grabbed Isidro Cano by the neck and started stabbing him.
Ramona Cano says she went to get help and returned to find her father-in-law lying on the ground near a bloody 10-inch-long knife.
