ATLANTA (AP) — Mike Montgomery hit his first home run and allowed two hits and one run in six innings to lead the streaking Chicago Cubs to an 8-2 win over the Atlanta Braves today. Javier Baez hit a three-run homer in the eighth for Chicago, which stretched its season-best winning streak to six games since the All-Star break. The Cubs completed a three-game sweep of the Braves.
ATLANTA (AP) — Kris Bryant suffered a sprained left little finger that forced him to leave the Chicago Cubs' game against the Atlanta Braves today. The Cubs say X-rays on Bryant were negative. His status is day to day and he will be monitored. Bryant doubled to center field off R.A. Dickey in the first inning. With two outs, Bryant tried to advance to third base on a pitch in the dirt. He slid head-first into third base but was thrown out by catcher Tyler Flowers. Bryant, the 2016 NL MVP, is hitting .273 with 19 homers and 40 RBIs.
MIAMI (AP) — Daniel Nava tied a career high with four hits and the Philadelphia Phillies had a season-best 20 hits today to beat Miami 10-3 and win a road series for only the third time this season. Nava singled in each of his first four at-bats, drove in two runs and hiked his average to .300. Miami's Giancarlo Stanton hit his 30th homer to forge a tie with the Yankees' Aaron Judge for the major league lead in homers.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Star outfielder J.D. Martinez joins the Arizona Diamondbacks, a day after they got him from Detroit for a trio of prospects. Martinez is expected to take over in left field and provide sorely needed pop against left-handed pitching. He is hitting .305 with 16 home runs and 39 RBIs going into Arizona's game at Cincinnati. The Diamondbacks are in firm control of a wild-card spot, but far back of the Dodgers in the NL West.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have signed quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, their first-round draft pick and the No. 2 overall selection in April. Trubisky started all 13 games for North Carolina last season, setting single-season school records for passing yards (3,748), passing touchdowns (30) and total offense (4,056) while completing 68 percent of his passes. He is not expected to start this season. Veteran Mike Glennon was signed in the offseason to take over for the departed Jay Cutler, and he gives the Bears time to develop Trubisky.
