The U.S. Navy says a woman fatally shot by Virginia police after she shot and wounded her husband was an active duty sailor, as is her husband.

Navy spokesman Matthew Allen said Tuesday that the husband, who was treated and released by a hospital after Monday night's shooting, is assigned to a unit on Naval Station Norfolk. Police in Virginia have not identified him.

Virginia State Police say in a statement that 25-five-year-old India N. Nelson shot her husband after they crashed their cars near the base.

Investigators say a Norfolk police officer then "engaged the woman and returned fire."

Allen says Nelson was a nuclear technician assigned to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Aircraft Carrier.

Norfolk police said in a statement that officers responded to a crash near a gate at Norfolk Naval Station on Monday night and while they were there, a woman shot a man. Police say an officer "engaged the woman and returned fire."

Police say the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was in critical condition.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative duty. Virginia State Police are investigating. Officials haven't released the names of the officers involved or of the woman who was shot.

Norfolk police spokeswoman Jo Ann Hughes said the department doesn't release the races of officers or victims.

She added that Norfolk patrol officers typically wear body cameras, although it's unknown if they captured the incident. She said such footage would be turned over to state police for their investigation.
