HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — It's Nick Saban and Alabama's turn at Southeastern Conference media days. The contingent from the Crimson Tide, the popular pick to win a fourth straight SEC title, makes the short trip from Tuscaloosa and as usual is expected to be greeted by a large group of fans in the hotel lobby.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Ed Orgeron matter of factly declared the SEC as "the best conference in the United States." But the LSU coach was mostly preaching to the choir in the league's backyard at the Southeastern Conference media days. The SEC's once-undisputed status as college football's top league is facing strong challenges from the ACC and Big Ten despite Alabama's best efforts.

UNDATED (AP) — Forty of the top players in women's college basketball have accepted invitations to the USA Basketball under-23 national team training camp in Colorado at the end of the month. Among them are four-time USA Basketball gold medalists Arike Ogunbowale of Notre Dame and Katie Lou Samuelson of UConn and A'ja Wilson, who helped lead South Carolina to its first NCAA championship last spring.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen helped develop several star quarterbacks as an assistant and a head coach, including Alex Smith (Utah), Tim Tebow (Florida) and Dak Prescott (Mississippi State). Now he has another budding standout in junior Nick Fitzgerald. Mullen said at SEC media days that when he recruits a QB he looks for intangible traits that are sometimes hard to coach.
