SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health authorities say they have confirmed additional cases of E. coli connected to an outbreak that previously killed two children in a mostly polygamous community on the Utah-Arizona border, bringing the total number of cases to 11.
Southwest Utah Public Health Department spokesman David Heaton said Tuesday that most of those affected are children, and all have gotten medical treatment.
Heaton said the cause of the outbreak is under investigation, but contaminated drinking water has been ruled out. Officials are looking at possible contaminated food or exposure to animals.
Residents are being warned not to drink raw milk or eat ground beef.
The sister towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona, are home to a polygamous group known as the Fundamentalist LDS Church.
