SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A polygamous sect leader is pleading not guilty to charges filed after his capture following nearly a year as a fugitive. Lyle Jeffs appeared before a federal judge in Utah on Monday, looking thinner than he did in previous court appearances. He could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted on the failure-to-appear charge.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Three teenage boys accused of fatally striking a West Valley City police officer with a stolen car will serve time in a long-term juvenile detention center. The Salt Lake Tribune reports they were sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to reduced charges in the death of Cody Brotherson, who was hit by a car during a police chase in November 2016.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah prosecutors have filed a misdemeanor charge against a man accused of setting off July 4 fireworks that sparked a grassfire in a suburban Salt Lake City neighborhood. Charges filed Monday say 49-year-old Richard Otterstrom of Cottonwood Heights used aerial fireworks in a restricted area, leaving embers that set dry brush ablaze.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — An Olympia, Washington man who authorities say mailed one of his fingers to the IRS is now facing federal charges. The reported Monday that 68-year-old Normand Lariviere was charged with mailing a threat to injure after IRS workers in Ogden, Utah discovered a package containing a fake bomb July 6.
