A recent KSL Editorial addressed the issue of so-called "Trucker Bombs." They're bottles or zip-loc bags of urine and feces that get flagrantly tossed from vehicles by thoughtless motorists, including truckers. We said the practice, which seems to be proliferating, must be stopped.
A number of truckers, including Mac Mathews of Mapleton, wrote to offer some insight into the abhorrent problem:
". . . I agree with you that it is disgusting but you need to place the blame where it really belongs and that is on (the Utah Department of Transportation). They are evidently the ones that are complaining and they are the ones that shut down the rest areas along I-15 and other places.
There used to be a rest stop on the top of Pine Creek hill (for example) and it was very popular and busy with other motorists. It is now closed because UDOT claimed it was too expensive to remain open.
Mathews points out that UDOT has implemented a public-private partnership for rest stops and is directing motorists toward certain gas stations.
"This is pure nonsense," writes Mathews. "UDOT is getting their just due. I have absolutely no sympathy for them."
