SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Javier Morales scored on a free kick in the 59th minute, and Real Salt Lake handed the San Jose Earthquakes their first loss in 10 matches with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
Real Salt Lake (9-10-7) went on top in the third minute, when a long ball from Morales sent Yura Movsisyan into the box. From the right side, Movsisyan cut inside defender Nick Garcia and drilled home a left-footed shot from 12 yards out.
San Jose (7-10-8) tied the game in the 23rd minute when Ryan Cochrane's chip found Darren Huckerby bursting up the middle. In alone on goal, Huckerby easily beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando with a blast inside the right post.
Huckerby scored again just after halftime, this time taking a back heel pass from Arturo Alvarez and breaking up the middle. His shot from the top of the arc beat Rimando cleanly inside the left post for a 2-1 San Jose lead.
Real Salt Lake tied the game just a minute later, as Movsisyan got on the end of a Kyle Beckerman chip and flicked in the bouncing ball.
Real Salt Lake is tied for third place in the West, the last guaranteed playoff spot, with 34 points. San Jose remains tied for sixth with 29 points.
