WASHINGTON (AP) — Health groups say President Donald Trump's proposal to cut funds for the National Institutes of Health would be devastating for patients with all kinds of diseases — and for jobs. As part of a list of administration spending priorities, Trump is calling for cutting $ 5.8 billion from the agency that is the nation's engine of biomedical research. The $1.15 trillion spending plan slashes many domestic programs to finance a significant increase in the military and to make a down payment on a U.S.-Mexico border wall.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The top two members of the Senate intelligence committee say there is no indication that Trump Tower was "the subject of surveillance" by the U.S. government before or after the 2016 election. That directly contradicts President Donald Trump, who earlier this month tweeted that former President Barack Obama had Trump Tower phones wiretapped. Despite a growing bipartisan list of lawmakers who have publicly disputed the allegation, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said today that the president stands by the claim.
WASHINGTON (AP) —Newly released records show former national security adviser Michael Flynn was paid more than $33,750 by Russia's government-run TV system for appearing at a Moscow event in December 2015. Flynn was also paid thousands more in expenses and for other speeches. Flynn, who had been fired in August 2014 as chief of the Defense Intelligence Agency, sat next to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the climax of the televised RT gala. President Donald Trump fired Flynn as national security adviser last month.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel has declared the Palestine Liberation Organization's main financial body a terrorist organization, infuriating the Palestinians. The fund makes monthly payments to about 35,000 families of Palestinians killed and wounded in its long-running conflict with Israel, including suicide bombers and other militants who targeted civilians and soldiers. Israel says the fund is an incentive for violence. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas calls the action an attempt to derail U.S. peace efforts.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man whose murder conviction was tossed by a California judge is free after 32 years in prison. Andrew Leander Wilson greeted well-wishers today after walking out of a Los Angeles County jail. Wilson, who is 62, had maintained his innocent since his arrest in 1984 in a stabbing death. He was represented by Loyola Law School's Project for the Innocent. His lawyers say Wilson will travel as soon as possible to St. Louis to visit his 96-year-old mother.
