PROVO, Utah (AP) — Provo's chief of police is resigning to devote more time to his family.
Provo police Sgt. Brian Taylor told The Daily Herald (http://tinyurl.com/j2jzflh) on Tuesday that Chief John King had been discussing taking an extended leave of absence but decided he needs to resign to return to the East Coast to help care for a family member. He plans to leave Friday for Long Island, New York.
Provo Mayor John Curtis says King had excelled in community outreach, especially the minority community, since he took the job in Provo in January 2014. He previously was the chief of police in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Curtis says one of the department's four captains will serve as chief on an interim basis during a three-month search for a permanent replacement.
