HYRUM, CACHE COUNTY — A man and woman are in custody after leading police on a low-speed pursuit in Blacksmith Fork Canyon on Sunday.
At approximately 5 a.m. a deputy attempted to pull over a vehicle on Route 101, near Hyrum, Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Peterson said in a statement. The driver of the vehicle refused to pull over and led deputies on a low-speed chase east into Blacksmith Fork Canyon.
“The suspect led deputies on a relatively low-speed pursuit all the way to Hardware Ranch where the road was covered with snow and the car was not able to continue,” Peterson said. “The driver turned the car around and faced deputies.”
After the driver refused to follow deputy commands to exit the vehicle, “the driver drove toward deputies and unsuccessfully attempted to ram a police vehicle,” Peterson said.
The vehicle drove westbound down the canyon, but a deputy deployed what Peterson described as a “tire deflation device” which disabled the vehicle and brought it to a stop.
Jesus Winces, 20, and Jessica Gonzalez, 20, were both taken into custody and face multiple charges Peterson said they’re both Logan residents.
A K9 search of the Hardware Ranch area found what police believe were drugs that had been thrown from the vehicle. Investigators also discovered "evidence of other criminal activities," Peterson said.
“There was no other traffic in the canyon and no citizens were endangered at any time during the incident,” Peterson said. Freeman Stevenson is a web producer at KSL.com
