ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A Florida judge has denied a "'stand your ground" defense for a retired Florida police officer who fatally shot a man in a movie theater over texting. The judge today ruled that 74-year-old Curtis Reeves must stand trial in the death of 43-year-old Chad Oulson. Reeves is charged with second-degree murder. Reeves said he shot Oulson after he was either punched or hit in the face with a cellphone. The judge said a videotape of the events that afternoon didn't support his testimony. The incident happened in a movie theater in a suburb north of Tampa, after the two men got into an argument because Oulson was texting his daughter's day care during the movie previews.
DETROIT (AP) — Volkswagen has pleaded guilty to cheating the U.S. government by using software to evade emission rules in nearly 600,000 diesel vehicles. The German automaker pleaded guilty today in Detroit to conspiracy, obstruction of justice and an import crime. The deal was made weeks ago. VW has agreed to pay a $4.3 billion penalty, although the scandal has cost the company about $21 billion. The company admitted installing software that activated pollution controls during government tests and switched them off during regular driving.
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is suggesting the FBI director should come forward to dispute President Donald Trump's baseless claim that he was wiretapped by former President Barack Obama. Trump's claim, Pelosi added, "couldn't possibly be true." Trump made the claim over Twitter about Obama wiretapping him, without evidence. Comey has privately urged the Justice Department to dispute the claim but has not come forward to do so himself. Pelosi spoke at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Tens of thousands of South Koreans have occupied a square in front of an old palace gate in Seoul to celebrate the ousting of President Park Geun-hye (goon-hay). The celebration came hours after the Constitutional Court removed her from office over a corruption scandal. But angry supporters of Park continued to scuffle with police in streets near the court. Two people died and dozens were injured in the clashes between Park's supporters and police following the ruling.
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Catholic church officials have announced that Pope Francis will visit Colombia in September. It will be the first papal visit to the South American country in 31 years. The first Latin American pope will arrive in Bogota on Sept. 6 and visit three other cities before returning to Rome on Sept. 11. Authorities have been talking about Francis' intention to travel to Colombia for over a year but the trip had been delayed several times as the Vatican avoided appearing to take sides in the country's debate over a peace deal with leftist rebels.
