WASHINGTON (AP) — The senior Army officer President Donald Trump has picked to be his national security adviser faces questions from senators during a rare closed-door meeting today. Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster's appearance before the Armed Services Committee is unusual because national security advisers aren't subject to Senate confirmation. But McMaster elected to stay on active duty rather than retire from the military and generals of his grade need the chamber's approval when they're promoted or get new assignments.
CAIRO (AP) — Somalia's new president is criticizing the revised U.S. travel ban, telling journalists that "definitely" he would prefer it be lifted and reminding the United States that it has a large Somali community. The revised ban temporarily bars new visas for citizens of six predominantly Muslim countries including Somalia, but Iraq is no longer on the list. Meanwhile, airport authorities in Cairo say they've allowed six Sudanese refugees to board a flight for New York because they have yet to receive any instructions from the United States on Trump's travel ban.
MOSUL, Iraq (AP) — U.S.-backed Iraqi forces have been fighting their way through a government complex in the heart of western Mosul after storming the buildings in an overnight raid. They continue to face fierce counterattacks from the Islamic State group. The advance is happening more than two weeks since the new push started to clear Mosul of militants.
PARIS (AP) — French authorities say there've fortunately been no fatalities after an avalanche struck a ski resort this morning. Officials say the avalanche struck the Tignes (teen) resort. French media reported that several skiers were caught up in the cascade of snow, but authorities say there've been no casualties and that the rescue operation is over. Weather services had warned yesterday of a high avalanche risk in mountain ranges because of strong winds.
BERLIN (AP) — German police have launched a manhunt for a 19-year-old man who allegedly killed a 9-year-old boy and boasted about the murder on a video posted online. Police in western Germany say they received a call last night from a member of the public, who feared that a killing had taken place in the town of Herne. Officers searching the basement of a house found the body of the boy.
