LOGAN — Utah State freshman Koby McEwen has made his presence known in just one season with the Aggies.

The former Wasatch Academy standout from Toronto, Ontario, averaged 14.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while leading the Aggies to a 13-15 record and a No. 8 seed in the Mountain West tournament, which starts Thursday against San Jose State in Las Vegas.

For his efforts, McEwen was unanimously named Freshman of the Year on Sunday by media that cover the conference. Colorado State senior guard Gian Clavell was voted Player of the Year, CSU’s Larry Eustachy took Coach of the Year honors and Nevada’s Marcus Marshall was named Newcomer of the Year.

Without McEwen and a slew of other newcomers like freshman Sam Merrill, a recently returned LDS missionary, Utah State’s season could’ve been even more difficult. He scored 18 and 28 points in wins over traditional Mountain West powers New Mexico and UNLV, respectively, then poured in 26 points to go with eight rebounds in the Aggies’ stunning 74-57 win over Nevada, which went on to win the Mountain West regular season title.

Utah State senior wing Jalen Moore was named to the all-Mountain West second team, and McEwen also took all-league third-team honors.

Utah State opens the Mountain West Tournament at 11 a.m. PT Wednesday against ninth-seeded San Jose State. The winner will face top-seeded Nevada at noon PT Thursday in a game that will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.

McEwen most recently had 23 points, five assists and three rebounds in the Aggies’ 81-75 win over the Spartans on Feb. 22.
