WASHINGTON (AP) — If the Trump administration has its way, the Environmental Protection Agency will have to make do with much less. The administration would slash programs aimed at slowing climate change and improving water safety and air quality, while eliminating thousands of jobs, according to a draft of the EPA budget proposal obtained by The Associated Press.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) —A coroner has released findings on the victims of a fire at a party at an Oakland warehouse. Investigators say it was smoke inhalation that killed all 36 victims at the warehouse and artists' colony known as the Ghost Ship. The cause of death has been known for weeks but came to light Friday when the San Francisco Chronicle called the coroner to check on the status of the investigation. Smoke inhalation is the cause of most fire deaths.
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A potential Great Lakes invader has three members of Congress concerned. Republican Reps. Bill Huizenga and Mike Bishop of Michigan and Democrat Marcy Kaptur of Ohio have written President Donald Trump, urging him to break a logjam on preventing Asian carp from making inroads. Shipping interests have opposed upgrades to keep the carp out of Lake Michigan, saying such changes could hamper cargo traffic.
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) —A government spokesman says attacks on tourists, security forces and a local writer have led to the execution of 10 men in Jordan who were convicted of terrorism charges. It was the largest round of executions since pro-Western Jordan launched its crackdown on Islamic extremists more than two years ago. The kingdom is a key member of the U.S.-led military coalition against the Islamic State group.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — There's disagreement over what actually happened but Afghan officials say that at least eight civilians, including four children, have been killed in an attack in western Afghanistan. Mohammad Naser Mehri, spokesman for the provincial governor, says that the incident was a roadside bomb explosion. But family members of the victims are claiming they were hit by an air strike.
