PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A winter storm brought more than 2 feet of snow to parts of northern New England overnight. More than 100,000 homes and businesses were without power as of this morning in hard-hit Maine. Hundreds of cars slid off roads from the beginning of the storm yesterday through today, when people began digging out.
CLEVELAND (AP) — U.S. Coast Guard crews are searching Lake Erie for a plane carrying six people that disappeared shortly after takeoff from a small Cleveland airport along the shore. The Columbus-bound Cessna Citation had three children and three adults aboard when it vanished from radar about 2 miles over the lake.
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned a new round of U.S. sanctions against his country but says Moscow will not retaliate by expelling American diplomats. President Barack Obama imposed sanctions on Russian officials and intelligence services in retaliation for Russia's interference in the U.S. presidential election.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia is urging the U.N. Security Council to quickly adopt a resolution endorsing the cease-fire agreement in Syria. The nationwide truce brokered by Russia and Turkey that went into effect at midnight last night has been holding despite minor violations.
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — An aircraft carrier strike group is back home after a long, seven-month deployment in the Middle East. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived today in Norfolk, Virginia, to cheers from hundreds of spouses and children. The strike group provided security and launched fighter planes that carried out missions against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
