MOSCOW (AP) — No sign of survivors after a Russian passenger plane with 92 people aboard, including a famed military band on the way to Syria, crashed into the Black Sea minutes after takeoff from the resort city of Sochi. Several bodies have been recovered. A total of 84 passengers and eight crew members were on the plane when it disappeared from radar after taking off in good weather.
CHICAGO (AP) — A white Christmas is in store for the northern Plains and some Western states, which is less than good news for travelers. Even Southern California got a dose of snow, with about 2 inches falling in a mountainous region north of Los Angeles. In Arizona, parts of Interstate 40 and other highways in the state's high country were closed due to winter weather.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A powerful typhoon is blowing menacingly closer to the eastern Philippines. Typhoon Nock-Ten is packing top sustained winds of 114 miles per hour and is expected to smash into the island province of Catanduanes (kah-tan-doo-AH'-nees) tonight.
SANDRINGHAM, England (AP) — A heavy cold has kept Queen Elizabeth II from attending the traditional Christmas morning church service near her Sandringham estate in rural Norfolk, England. It's extremely rare for Elizabeth to miss the service, which is a cornerstone of the royal family's Christmas celebrations.
JACOB LAKE, Ariz. (AP) — A sheriff's official is calling it "a Christmas miracle." Searchers have found and rescued a Pennsylvania family of three who were stranded in two locations in a northern Arizona forest. The family's vehicle got stuck on a snowy road while trying to reach the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is closed for the winter.
