I'll have more later (after rankings come out, etc.), but if there's been a better day for BYU or the MWC, I haven't seen it.

*******

BYU beats UCLA 59-0 while the conference goes 7-1, including wins over FOUR Pac-10 teams (UCLA, Stanford, Arizona and Arizona State). Hey SDSU, thanks for messing up the "sweep." I guess it was too much to expect the Aztecs to hold their own against San Jose State.

*******

Max Hall has had a spectacular start to the season. He has 1,095 passing yards (3rd nationally), 12 passing touchdowns (2nd nationally), 2 interceptions, a 78% completion percentage (3rd nationally), and a passer rating of 186.8 (7th nationally). Next week versus Wyoming, he will surpass 5,000 yards for his BYU career--in his 17th game as a Cougar. Max is 14-2 as a BYU starter. And, of yeah: he joins Marc Wilson and Jim McMahon in the BYU record books for most touchdown passes in a single game (7).

*******

Saturday v. UCLA, BYU scored more points in the FIRST HALF (42) than Wyoming has scored all season (40). BYU is 14th nationally in scoring offense--the Cowboys are 111th.

*******

If BYU's win at Washington wasn't impressive enough to keep the AP voters from dropping the Cougars last week, I wonder if East Carolina's last-minute escape at Tulane (!) will keep the Pirates 14th in the AP poll this week...

*******

While BYU's "Nickel Back/Safety-LB hybrid" defense isn't a true "3-3-5" the was Bronco was used to coaching it, employing a 5th defensive back was innovative and effective v. the Bruins. Bronco said it took every last minute of available practice and walk-through time to feel that the players could make the defense work.

*******

For the first time in recorded BYU history, the Cougars have gone three straight games without allowing a single sack. BYU is one of only 8 teams yet to allow a sack this season.

*******

BYU continues to lead the nation in 3rd down conversion percentage (78.1%), and second place Penn State isn't close, at 65.1%.

BYU is 5th nationally in 1st downs/game (27.7). Only Houston (62) has more passing first downs than BYU (60).

*******

In light of BYU's 8th straight sellout, it bears noting that BYU drew more fans yesterday (64,153) than Wyoming has drawn in three home games combined (62,754). I realize stadium capacities differ greatly, but three straight Wyoming sellouts would equal 97,740 fans.

*******

Austin Collie v. UCLA: 3 games, 23 catches, 296 yards, 5 touchdowns. It's okay, Alterraun Verner; you won't see number 9 anymore--except in vivid flashbacks.

*******

O'Neill Chambers ranks 17th nationally in kickoff return yardage.

*******

BYU has scores on 16 of 18 Blue Zone penetrations, with 15 touchdowns. Yesterday marked BYU's first field goal attempt and conversion of the season, and BYU's first "non-Blue Zone" score. BYU's two Blue Zone failures have been fumbles.

*******

Before I can officially start to worry about UNLV posing a threat to BYU, I will need to see the Rebels follow up their overtime win at Arizona State with another win or two. Last year, UNLV did absolutely nothing after shutting out Utah. In last night's on-field postgame interview, UNLV head coach Mike Sanford choked up, and called it the "biggest win of his career."

*******

On the website realtimerpi.com (new Sagarin ratings aren't out as of this writing), the MWC is listed as the 4th best conference in the country--ahead of BCS leagues the ACC, Big East and Pac-10.

*******

Speaking of the BCS, Fresno State bowed out of "big bowl" contention with its 13-10 home loss to what appears to be an overrated Wisconsin team. Fresno State was also overrated--they have failed to score in each of their two first halves so far this season. And enough already about how Fresno will play "anyone, anywhere." They're an okay team, but c'mon... when's the last time Fresno won a really big game?

*******

BYU happened to draw the Washington Huskies on their best day of the season (and BYU still should have won handily). It would appear to me that coming off the road loss at Oregon, UW rallied v. the Cougars, then never recovered from the close call and came out unfocused, undisciplined and unprepared for Oklahoma's onslaught. The win at Washington doesn't look as good as a result, and it may not get much more attractive--since I can see the Huskies folding as coach Ty Willingham goes down in flames. Jake Locker might keep UW in some games, but that team looked baaaaaaaaaad last night.
