Peter Carey, an Australian author and two-time winner of the Man Booker Prize, has been longlisted for this year's prize along with another 18 authors.
Carey, who is being considered this year for his most recent novel Theft: A Love Story, previously won the literary award in 1988 and 2001.
A shortlist of the 19 books, which were selected from 112 entries, will be revealed on 14 September 2006 and the overall winner is due to be announced on 10 October 2006.
This year's other nominated writers include David Mitchell for Black Swan Green, Kate Grenville for The Secret River, MJ Hyland for Carry Me Down, Howard Jacobson for Kalooki Nights, Sarah Waters for The Night Watch and Naeem Murr for The Perfect Man.
Hermione Lee, author and academic and this year's chair of judges, said the entries have shown variety, originality, human interest and strong voices.
