TRENTON, N.J., Aug 15, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- New Jersey's attorney general resigned Monday over allegations she helped her boyfriend get special treatment during a traffic stop.
Gov. Jon Corzine said at a Tuesday evening news conference he has accepted Attorney General Zulima Farber's resignation, effective at the end of this month, the Trenton (N.J.) Star-Ledger at nj.com said.
The resignation was in "the best interests of the state," Corzine said.
In fact, Corzine asked Farber to step down during a Tuesday morning meeting in his Trenton office, the newspaper said, quoting a senior Democratic source. Farber is a Corzine appointee.
Corzine has made ethics a priority for his administration in the sometimes ethically challenged atmosphere of New Jersey politics.
The governor earlier appointed a special prosecutor to investigate whether Farber sought or received favorable treatment from Fairview, N.J., officers when her boyfriend, Hamlet Gore, was pulled over in Bergen County, the Star-Ledger said.
The counsel's report said Farber's conduct "does raise significant ethical questions that must be addressed."
