THE KITCHEN — If anyone is a food expert, it’s the good folks behind Bon Appetit magazine.
They’ve been religiously studying and writing about food since their first publication in 1955, so they know a thing or two about what American’s eat and the changing food trends.
This year, they decided to take that knowledge to make a charming video involving young children partaking of desserts that were popular at Christmas in every decade from 1920 until now.
In the video, these innocent, brave young children take mostly tiny, timid bites of each dessert then describe what they think of it. Some reactions are surprisingly thoughtful, even when a kid doesn’t like the dessert. Of course, some reactions are all about pulled faces and tortured body language, which I’m sure every parent has seen around the table after the mention of some ingredient or other.
The children are not told what’s in the dessert before they give their opinion. However, once they know about the key ingredient, it’s funny to see how some opinions change right quick. Let’s just say raisins are not often welcome in any part of some kids’ lives.
For me, the mayonnaise-based Christams pear salad is the most puzzling dessert of the lot. It just seems like cruel and unusual punishment, no matter the economic or political climate of the 1930s. However, I wouldn’t mind trying that 2016 sweet potato miso pie. I’m sure it’ll be something the children of America will find to be absolutely foul in 100 years.
