OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Utah's Rocky Mountain Power is proposing additional fees for solar customers.
The Standard-Examiner reports that the utility company is proposing to raise and add charges to solar customers to offset costs created by net metering, in which Rocky Mountain Power pays solar customers for power they generate during the day.
New customers would see one charge rise from $6 to $15 and receive a charge of $9.02 per kilowatt during high demand periods. Solar customers would also pay an additional 3.81 cents per kilowatt-hour for energy used.
Changes to Rocky Mountain Power's net metering price can't go into effect unless approved by the Utah Public Service Commission.
Solar advocates say the proposed rate structure would neutralize the cost-saving benefit of having solar, killing any incentive to install panels.
