ATLANTA (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is again distancing himself from the alt-right movement whose white supremacist members see his election as a boon for their agenda. Trump told the New York Times that he disavows and condemns the National Policy Institute, whose members shouted "Heil Trump" and gave the Nazi Salute at a weekend meeting in Washington. The Republican president-elect says he does not want to "energize" such groups.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A federal magistrate judge in San Antonio who told people at a citizenship swearing-in ceremony that they "need to go to another country" if they object to Donald Trump's presidency now plans to retire next year. A local newspaper (The San Antonio Express-News) says U.S. Magistrate Judge John Primomo disclosed his plans today to Western District federal judges after they barred his from presiding over future naturalization ceremonies. Primomo has said his words were meant to be unifying and respectful of the presidency, not political.
BEIRUT (AP) — A Syrian monitoring group says rebels are preventing dozens of families from getting out of eastern Aleppo as Russian-backed government forces intensify their bombing of the city. These types of claims are often difficult to verify, but a resident in the city does say a crossing his family was planning to use to get to a safer area was shot at by rebels. Syrian and Russian state media have maintained that rebels are holding the people of eastern Aleppo hostage in order to use them as human shields.
DETROIT (AP) — An officer at Detroit's Wayne State University is in the hospital after being shot while on duty a few blocks from the school in the city's Midtown neighborhood. The shooting follows four recent incidents around the country in which law enforcement officers were shot. The shootings of police officers in Texas and Missouri on Sunday were the latest in what law enforcement officials say is an alarming spike in ambush-style attacks.
PLANO, Texas (AP) — Toyota is recalling 834,000 Toyota Sienna minivans, most of them in North America, because the sliding doors can open while the vehicle is moving. The recall involves Sienna minivans from the 2011-2016 model years. Toyota says it will repair the doors for free, but the company is still developing a remedy for the problem.
