This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Explosive! That's how one could describe the growth of EK Ekcessories in Logan. The company started in 1985 when Ed Kalbach was working in a small ski shop. He was always creative and blessed with an inquisitive mind and strong entrepreneurial spirit, but the ski shop provided Ed with ideas that could enhance the outdoor experience.

Cat Flaps, which are panels that snap on temples of sunglasses to provide additional protection, were one of the first products that came from Ed's prolific mind. This started the design, manufacturing and distribution of hundreds of unique and useful products.

EK Ekcessories (spelled "E-K-cessories," utilizing Ed Kalbach's initials in the name) is a world leader in the outdoor accessory market. The company's products range from the nationally best-selling eyewear retainers to unique and functional outdoor products. More than 200 different products now exist, including watchbands, lanyards, security pass holders, pet products, key rings, motor sports accessories and product displays. I can't describe all of the items, but I would venture to say you have seen and probably used products from EK Ekcessories.

I really became familiar with the company when it was awarded the rights to be an official licensee for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games. That was just one of the many honors bestowed upon Ed Kalbach and his fine company. Ed has been named the Utah Small Business Person of the Year, and EK Ekcessories won Utah's Best of State Manufacturing Award. The business also has been a finalist for Utah's Entrepreneur of the Year award and has won many awards for product design service to the industry.

While EK has roots in outdoor accessories, it also has had success with private labeling, licensing of products and motor sports in the safety/security and pet accessory markets.

Look for more innovation and success in the future of Ed Kalbach and this fine company.
