BERLIN (AP) — President Barack Obama has arrived in Germany, as part of what's likely to be his final overseas trip as president. Obama arrived last night in Berlin from Greece. German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN'-geh-lah MEHR'-kuhl) is scheduled to have talks with Obama this afternoon. And on Friday, he'll meet with the leaders of France, Italy, Spain and Britain. Obama is expected to address Donald Trump's election and the direction the U.S. might take in the next four years.
TOKYO (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to meet today in New York with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh ah-bay). Trump has said in the past that he would demand that NATO allies such as Japan and South Korea contribute more to the cost of basing U.S. troops in their countries. And Abe will likely be looking for assurances from Trump that he will remain committed to the U.S.-Japan security alliance.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton admits that the past week hasn't been easy, but she's telling supporters to continue to "stay engaged on every level." Clinton spoke last night at the annual gala of the Children's Defense Fund, and said, "It's up to each and every one of us to keep working to make America better and stronger and fairer."
CANTON, Ill. (AP) — A natural gas explosion last night in central Illinois shattered windows several blocks away and forced the evacuation of residents from nearby apartment buildings. Authorities say one person was killed and several people were injured in the blast at the Opera House Professional Center in Canton. Authorities don't know what caused the explosion. Officials have closed off a two-block area as they assess the damage.
UNDATED (AP) — The U.S. surgeon general is calling for a major cultural shift in the way Americans view drug and alcohol addiction. Dr. Vivek Murthy has released a report today that details the toll addiction takes on the nation and explains how brain science offers hope for recovery. The report says addiction is a chronic illness, not a character flaw or a moral failing.
