This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

We're all familiar with waterbeds, memory foam beds or standard innerspring mattresses. But recently, a new bed has been added to that household list. Intelli-Bed is a new type of mattress that is made by the Utah-based company, Advanced Comfort Technology.

These beds use Intelli-Gel, a material that was invented in 1993 by the Utah research and development company, EdiZONE. The material has been used in wheelchair cushions, hospital beds, shoe footpads, backpacks and a variety of other worldwide products.

Bob Rasmussen, president of Advanced Comfort, was part of the team that pioneered Intelli-Gel. He later acquired the license that gave the company exclusive rights for the United States and Canada to use Intelli-Gel in mattresses, overlays and pillows. Intelli-Gel is great for this application because it has the unique ability to redistribute body weight across the hollow cells in the gel, which relieves pressure points and increases alignment support.

Originally, Intelli-Beds were distributed through doctors and consumer shows; but in 2001, the first Intelli-Bed retail store opened in Salt Lake City. Since then, stores have been added in Orem, Riverdale and St. George, as well as in other surrounding states. The stores have a "sleep lab," in which customers can test and compare different types of beds, including air beds, memory foam beds, standard innerspring beds and, of course, the Intelli-Bed.

The stores' "Sleep Consultants" are also on-hand to use a computer pressure mapping system that shows the distribution of weight for each individual. The consultants can then help customers scientifically evaluate the right bed for their unique circumstances.

The Intelli-Bed is unique and comfortable, and like its slogan says, "Intelli-Bed is the smart choice for a great night's sleep."
