This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
We're fortunate here in Utah to have one of the only glass companies in the region that offers original glasswork and design along with fabrication and installation. It's called Beehive Glass Company. Many of you may know the name if you've built or remodeled a custom home and included custom glasswork.
Beehive Glass began 36 years ago. Peter Birth, a native of Germany, moved to Utah and brought with him European glass-working techniques. Peter's father and grandfather were also in the glazing business, so it was natural for him to pick up the skills. Shortly after his arrival in Utah, he set up shop and began working on standard glazing products as well as stained and leaded glass windows. He worked from a little place on State Street. The business did well and eventually grew too large for its space. So, Peter moved into what is now his current location at 3070 E. and 3300 S. He now employs roughly 30 people, most of whom either install or fabricate the glass.
I spoke with Peter's son, Oliver, who is also in the business. He told me that Beehive Glass specializes in Euro-style shower doors, tempered glass products and beveled mirrors, in addition to stained and etched art glass products. The Euro-style doors are a fairly new concept and very popular. I've even put them in my new home. Basically, the doors are frameless and contain only hinges and a handle, which emphasize the beauty of the glass. I was interested to learn that thick glass can also be used for kitchen and bathroom countertops.
Stained glass has been around for hundreds of years and is still popular today. Oliver told me there's a designer in the shop who has specialized in creating custom leaded glass windows at Beehive Glass for more than 20 years. In addition, Beehive Glass is one of the only companies around that does restoration work on older stained glass windows.
Ironically, Beehive Glass doesn't do basic windows, but ask them to do something unique and unusual, and you'll get the sharpest job around.
