BARTELLA, Iraq (AP) — A senior Iraqi military commander says Iraqi special forces have driven Islamic State militants out of a town just east of Mosul. The general says it's an important step in the operation to retake Mosul from the Islamic State group. The offensive marks the entry of Iraq's U.S.-trained special forces into the Mosul operation, the largest operation launched by Iraqi forces since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
NEW YORK (AP) — Last night's presidential debate wasn't the last face-to-face showdown for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump before Election Day. Tonight both are scheduled to appear at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in New York City. Every four years, the white-tie gala becomes a showcase for presidential politics. And unlike last night's sometimes nasty debate, tradition dictates that the candidates deliver humorous remarks poking fun at each other and themselves.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Association of Realtors says more Americans bought homes in September despite a persistent shortage of properties for sale. Sales of existing homes rose 3.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.47 million, the highest since June. Sales rose across the country. The supply of available homes was down 6.8 percent from a year ago.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple says it has been buying Apple products labeled as genuine on Amazon.com and found nearly 90 percent of them to be counterfeit. The revelation comes in a federal lawsuit filed by Apple against a New Jersey company. In the lawsuit, Apple says Mobile Star imprinted Apple logos on products that "pose a significant risk of overheating, fire, and electrical shock. Apple says it purchased the products on Amazon and later told the online retailer that they were fake. Amazon then identified Mobile Star as the source. Amazon isn't named in the suit.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Zoo will be saying bye-bye to Bao Bao (bow bow). The zoo in Washington, D.C., says the panda cub will move to China within the first few months of next year. Part of the zoo's cooperative breeding agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association is that all cubs born at the zoo move to China by the time they turn 4 years old. Bao Bao will turn 4 on Aug. 23, 2017. Bao Bao is the first surviving cub born at the zoo since 2005.
