This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
The other day, a listener contacted me about a company he had previously worked for. He told me he enjoyed the company because it followed a great philosophy for its employees. The philosophy was more or less this: "We will give you the work to do, provide you with the tools to do it and give you the autonomy to get it done your way."
That statement peaked my interest, so I decided to look into this company set on empowering its employees. And I soon found myself knocking at the door of Savage Services Corporation headquartered in Salt Lake City. I quickly learned that Savage is a national leader in providing creative solutions for materials management and transportation systems and facilities to customers and industries all over North America.
It all began in 1946. Kenneth Savage returned home to American Fork after serving in the U.S. Navy. He and his father teamed up to start the company and called it C.A. Savage and Son. They purchased a KB-5 International two axle and a stake bed truck and were soon serving customers throughout the Intermountain West. Later, Kenneth invited two younger brothers, Neal and Luke, to join him. Since that time, the company has expanded and now provides service for many different industries with business units located in some 25 states and two Canadian provinces.
The company's success can be attributed to what they call "The Savage System." It provides service that can be summarized in four words — "Best Value-No Worry." The system is actually comprised of three integral parts — providing creative solutions tailored to each customer's unique needs, providing outstanding customer service and then re-creating business opportunities with existing customers through welcomed feedback. All of this begins with dedicated, empowered employees. And we already know that Savage Services excels with that.
