SEATTLE (AP) — Thousands are still without electricity in the Pacific Northwest after a weekend storm. Utility crews in Oregon and Washington are working all out to restore power lines and remove dozens of downed trees to clear roads that the storm damaged. Meteorologists still expect rain and wind gusts throughout the day. There is some good news however: The storm was not as bad as predicted.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska police officer is hospitalized in Anchorage after an early morning shooting. The Fairbanks News-Miner reports the officer was seriously wounded. Fairbanks police are still searching for the shooter. He's described as a 20-year-old Native man. Police say he was wearing a black Carhartt-brand jacket and a ball cap.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton's running mate is defending the campaign's respect for different religions after a hacked email by a Clinton aide suggested that Catholicism is more "socially acceptable" for conservatives than evangelicals. Tim Kaine — a lifelong Catholic — says Clinton saw his religion as "a real asset." In an interview with ABC's "This Week," Kaine said the two discussed their faith at length before Clinton asked Kaine to join her on the ticket.
LONDON (AP) — The United States and Britain say they're considering new economic sanctions on the Syrian and Russian governments because of their conduct in war-ravaged Aleppo. After a 10-nation meeting in London, Secretary of State John Kerry says crimes against humanity are occurring daily in Syria. Kerry and his British counterpart are expressing hope about a diplomatic effort with Russia and several other countries that Kerry began on Saturday.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A bad cable is delaying a rocket launch from Virginia by a NASA shipper. Orbital ATK was poised to fly its Antares rocket tonight with a load of supplies for the International Space Station. But NASA announced the flight is being put off until Monday night. NASA is paying Orbital ATK as well as the SpaceX company to deliver cargo to the station. Orbital ATK has been grounded for two years.
