WEST VALLEY CITY — A 56-year-old man was critically injured after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street against traffic Saturday night, police said.
Emergency crews responded to a report of the incident near 3500 Decker Lake Drive just before 9:30 p.m., according to West Valley police Lt. Steve Burke.
Burke said the man was walking north-south and walking against the light when two vehicles traveling in the street he was crossing came across him. One driver saw the man and was able to avoid him, but the second vehicle struck him.
"He got to about the middle lane when a car was able to swerve around him and then the car trailing behind that car didn't see him and struck him," Burke said. "The pedestrian went up on the hood of the car and was carried for a few feet before he fell off and landed in the road."
The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, Burke said.
Burke said police are investigating the incident and no citations have been issued. He added it's a reminder for motorists and pedestrians to pay attention to their surroundings when crossing a street.
"Had (the pedestrian) just waited until it was his turn to cross the street, this would have never happened," he said.
