PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — High winds and heavy rain are making lives miserable in the Northwest. Trees and power lines are coming down as a powerful storm hits the region. Thousands of people are without electricity in Oregon and Washington. The storm bears remnants of a Pacific typhoon. The Washington Department of Transportation says trees came down on Interstate 5 near Olympia, blocking the right lane. No injuries are reported.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's military says the latest missile launch by North Korea ended in failure after the projectile exploded soon after liftoff on Saturday. The South Korean military believes the North unsuccessfully attempted to fire a mid-range missile. It says the launch was made near an airport. Seoul says it strongly condemns the launch because it violates U.N. Security Council resolutions that bans any ballistic activities by North Korea.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says the presidential race is shaping up as "a rigged election." Hillary Clinton's campaign disagrees. Campaign manager Robby Mook says participation in the electoral system is something to be encouraged, and not, in his words, "dismissed or undermined because a candidate is afraid he's going to lose." House Speaker Paul Ryan's office says the GOP leader is "fully confident" the election will be carried out "with integrity."
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say a pickup truck plunged off the San Diego-Coronado Bridge this afternoon and plowed into a crowd gathered at a park below, leaving four people dead and at least eight injured. Witnesses say the truck landed on a vendor tent set up for a motorcycle festival in Chicano Park. The cause of the crash is under investigation. The park is located in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in central San Diego.
TULSA, Okla. (AP) —A former NFL defensive lineman whose career was ended by neck injury was killed Saturday in a car accident in Oklahoma. Dennis Byrd was 50. He broke his neck during a game in 1992 and never fully recovered. Byrd, a devout Christian, wrote a book in 1993 called "Rise and Walk," which detailed how he relied on his faith and family to push him through the injury. Byrd's story was later made into a made-for-TV movie starring Peter Berg.
