This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Eight years ago, Rachael Smith brought home a personal computer. Rachael has always had a great interest and curiosity in technology, but until that computer entered her house, she didn't even know how to turn one on. According to Rachael, she couldn't stay away from it, and now that curiosity has paid off. Rachael now owns and operates Just Raw Speed, a company based in Salem, Utah that provides radio wireless high-speed broadband Internet for surrounding areas.

Before Just Raw Speed began, Rachael was involved in the real estate business. She tells me she realized that high-speed Internet was an absolute must, especially with the mortgage industry going paperless. There weren't many prospects for high-speed access in Salem at the time, and Rachael was just plain frustrated with dial-up Internet access. I'm sure that many of us can relate. There really is nothing worse than waiting for slow Internet access. In fact, Rachael tells me that the Internet is so much more graphic and application intensive that it isn't worth it to have dialup. Something had to be done.

After one year of studying information technology at the University of Phoenix, Rachael and some friends started a high-speed broadband Internet provider company. In 2002, she left that company, hired a head network and database engineer, and started Just Raw Speed. The company now provides residential service for communities including Salem, Woodland Hills, Elkridge, Mapleton and Springville. Initially, Just Raw Speed had 17 customers and now, one year later, the business serves approximately120.

Rachael tells me that success has come from the individual attention that each customer receives. Customers pay a reasonable $40 per month and get a stable connection with 24-hour service response. Rachael tells me that her local wireless Internet company meets customers' needs just as well as a national or regional entity.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
