At Scenic Design in Murray, almost any scene imaginable to the mind is possible to create. The company specializes in designing, creating and manufacturing all kinds of three dimensional props and backdrops used by photographers, filmmakers and businesses. You don't have to travel far to have your picture taken in an enchanted forest next to a pollywog pond or on a remote tropical beach with blue skies.
Gary Voorhees and Linda Eastlick own Scenic Design. Gary has been in the prop and scenery business since 1973. While a theater major at the University of Utah Gary worked as the set designer for Utah's theatrical giant Ralph Rogers. Later, Gary switched to the television arena working for the Osmonds on the "Donny and Marie Show" and doing free lance work for television commercials. During those years, he developed the idea to use textured paper for set design backgrounds and started his own company.
Business went well for Gary, and he soon found himself exploring ways to make three dimensional realistic rock walls from polyurethane. Lady Footlocker liked his idea and placed an order for 1,850 realistic rocks.
The polyurethane medium not only allows Scenic Design to realistically produce just about anything the mind can think of, but it also gives the sets and props a highly durable flexibility. Many of Gary's creations can simply be rolled up and stored in a closet. Scenic Design makes everything from stumps and fire hydrants to large brick walls and ornate gates. Some of Gary's bigger products include an inner city street scene, a tree house and, of course, an enchanted forest.
Renowned photographers such as Dave Newman, Drake Busath, and Lisa Jane Murphey frequently use props crafted by Gary and his team. Some of Scenic Design's work has even been used in "Touched by an Angel" and the new series, "Everwood."
