Today I'd like to tell you about one particular product that I think you'll find a bit out of the ordinary. Bear Lake. Hold on — I don't mean just the lake — I mean everything above the lake, under the lake and surrounding the lake.
I know what you're thinking — Bear Lake's not a product. But it is for Judy Holbrook. Judy is Tourism Director of the Bear Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau. She lives in Fish Haven, Idaho.
Bear Lake spans the border between Utah and Idaho. Half of the lake is in one state, and half of the lake is in the other. One of Judy's responsibilities is to manage the visitors' centers in the nearby towns of Garden City, Randolph and Fish Haven. Judy works closely with local chambers, businesses, county commissioners and other elected officials from both Bear Lake County in Idaho and Rich County in Utah to coordinate advertising and to encourage tourism. In fact, in recent years, hotel and motel bookings in the area have increased by 30 percent.
Bear Lake has been called the Caribbean of the Rockies, but as Judy pointed out to me, "you can get there in just one tank of gas." Judy wants visitors to see the Bear Lake Valley as an affordable all-seasons vacation destination. Besides the obvious activities associated with boating, the valley offers hiking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, golfing, cave exploring and Raspberry Days — not to mention snowmobiling and snow shoeing in the winter, and the fabulous skiing at nearby resorts. And if you do decide to visit Bear Lake, be sure to keep an eye out for the legendary Bear Lake Monster. It hasn't been spotted in over 100 years — but it could resurface at any time.
