PHOENIX (AP) — U.S. Sen. John McCain has beaten back a primary challenge from tea party activist Kelli Ward, who contended that McCain's age should have been disqualifying. McCain, who just turned 80, will face a tough Democratic challenge in November's general election from Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick. Also winning Tuesday in Arizona was Phoenix-area Sheriff Joe Arpaio (ahr-PY'-oh), who held off three Republican rivals.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida voters will decide in November who will be their next U.S. senator. Marco Rubio won the nomination for his old seat. He'll face Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz won the nomination to keep her seat. But Rep. Corrine Brown won't be returning to Washington in the next Congress. Brown, who faces felony charges, lost to former State. Sen. Al Lawson.
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — On the same day he's to deliver what's being billed as a major speech on immigration, Donald Trump will travel to Mexico on Wednesday to meet with President Enrique Pena Nieto. Trump tweeted on Tuesday night that he looks forward to the meeting. Speaking at a rally in suburban Seattle, Trump charged that people in the country illegally are taking jobs "from hardworking African-Americans and Hispanic citizens."
MILWAUKEE (AP) — About 10 people have been arrested in Milwaukee after dozens gathered near where a black man was fatally shot by police earlier this month. Police said those detained were among dozens of protesters who refused to leave. Meanwhile in Chicago, formal administrative charges have been filed to fire five officers, including one who shot an unarmed black teen 16 times.
HONOLULU (AP) — An emergency declaration is in effect in Hawaii because of the potential threat posed by two hurricanes. Category 2 Madeline is expected to bring hurricane force conditions to the Big Island within 36 hours. In Florida, a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico has prompted a hurricane watch along a portion of the Panhandle. On the East Coast, tropical weather is generating rain along North Carolina's coast.
