HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's governor has issued an emergency proclamation as a major hurricane hurtles toward the state. And the U.S. Coast Guard is asking crews of barges and ships to prepare to leave Hilo Harbor. Hawaii's Big Island is under a hurricane warning as category 3 Madeline approaches. The National Weather Service says hurricane conditions are expected within the next 36 hours.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida representative in Congress dealing with a criminal indictment and revamped district has lost her battle to stay in office. Democratic Rep. Corrine Brown's 24-year run in Congress was ended by former State Sen. Al Lawson, who defeated her in the Democratic primary. In other contests across Florida, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Shultz beat a strong Bernie Sanders-backed primary challenger. And Sen. Marco Rubio, who decided at the last minute to seek a second term, easily fended off a millionaire homebuilder. He'll face Rep. Patrick Murphy.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says on Twitter he's accepted an invitation to visit Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, and looks forward to meeting him Wednesday. Mexico's president extended an invitation to Trump and Hillary Clinton. Trump has made illegal immigration and his call for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, but he's recently suggested he may soften his hardline positions.
BEIRUT (AP) — The Islamic State group says its spokesman and chief strategist has been killed while overseeing operations in northern Syria. But it's not yet clear who was responsible for Abu al-Adnani's death. A U.S. defense official says a U.S. airstrike on Tuesday targeted an IS "senior leader" northeast of Aleppo. But the official did not say whether the target was al-Adnani. The U.S. is apparently still assessing the results of that strike.
NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities in New York say five kayakers have been hurt by a ferry that was leaving a pier on the Hudson River. Police say the kayakers were hit by the NY Waterway ferry near Pier 79 on Manhattan's west side. They were part of a group of 10 people paddling in 8 kayaks. The most badly hurt is person is in stable condition with a serious arm injury.
