HONOLULU (AP) — A hurricane warning has been posted for Hawaii's Big Island. That's because of the approach of Hurricane Madeline, a category 3. Hurricane conditions are expected within the next 36 hours. President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Oahu this week. In Florida, a hurricane watch is in effect for an area stretching from northwest of Tampa to an area east of Panama City.

BEIRUT (AP) — It hasn't been confirmed, but the Islamic State group is saying that its spokesman and chief strategist has been killed during military operations in northern Syria. The extremist group is vowing to avenge the death of Muhammed al-Adnani. The borders of the group's self-declared Islamic caliphate have been steadily eroded in recent months.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson has filed formal administrative charges to fire the officer who fatally shot black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014. Four other officers who were at the scene and accused of making false reports also face firing. Officer Jason Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder the same day the city released dashcam video that shows him shooting McDonald 16 times. The video contradicts the accounts of officers at the scene.

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) — An attorney for families in an Indiana public housing complex scheduled for demolition because of lead contamination says he's investigating whether public officials knew about the problem and allowed children to be "poisoned." Officials in East Chicago notified some 1,000 residents about the soil contamination this summer. State officials previously said preliminary blood tests indicated 29 people with high lead levels.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A bizarre standoff is over at the home of singer Chris Brown. Los Angeles police say Brown has come out of his home after officers responding to a woman's call for help served a search warrant. The standoff lasted for hours. Police say the woman called from outside the home. Brown posted videos to social media declaring his innocence before his lawyer Mark Geragos arrived.
