BEIRUT (AP) — A key player in the extremist group Islamic State has apparently been taken out in a military operation. An IS spokesman says Abu Muhammed al-Adnani was killed in fighting in the Syrian city of Aleppo. If confirmed, it would be a major blow to the extremist group, which has been on the retreat in Syria and Iraq. Al-Adnani, whose real name is Taha Sobhi Falaha, persistently called for attacks against the West.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four leading House Democrats are calling for the FBI to investigate whether Donald Trump's presidential campaign was involved in the recent hack of Democratic Party computers. The letter to FBI Director James Comey was written by Reps. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, Elliot Engel of New York and Bennie Thompson of Mississippi. The lawmakers say the FBI should determine whether Russia conducted cyberattacks "to interfere with the U.S. presidential election."

PHOENIX (AP) — Two of Arizona's longest serving elected officials face primary challenges today. Six-term Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio (ahr-PY'-oh) faces a trio of challengers in his primary. Arpaio faces federal criminal contempt charges. Sen. John McCain is facing a tough battle with a doctor who is also a former state senator who is vowing to retire the five-term Republican a day after his 80th birthday. Kelli Ward, who lags in the polls, has made McCain's age an issue.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Agriculture Department says threats it considers serious have prompted the closure of six USDA locations in five states. The threat was contained in an email sent to multiple employees at all of the locations. The closed facilities are in Fort Collins, Colorado; Hamden, Connecticut; Beltsville, Maryland; Raleigh, North Carolina; Kearneysville, West Virginia and Leetown, West Virginia.

HONOLULU (AP) — Residents of Hawaii's Big Island are bracing for what could be the first hurricane to make landfall in Hawaii in decades. But forecasters are saying Hurricane Madeline, now a major Category 3 storm, is expected to weaken as it passes the state. A hurricane warning has been issued. Meanwhile, a hurricane watch has been issued for parts of Florida stretching from northwest of Tampa to an area east of Panama City. A tropical depression is churning in the Gulf about 345 miles west of Key West.
