BEIRUT (AP) — The man who laid out the blueprint for Islamic State attacks against the West is dead.

That's according to an announcement from the extremist group, which says the Islamic State's spokesman and chief strategist was killed while overseeing operations in northern Syria.

A news agency run by the group says it will avenge the death of Abu Muhammed al-Adnani. It didn't offer any details on when or how he died.

It would be a major blow to the group, which has been on the retreat in Syria and Iraq.

Al-Adnani persistently called for attacks against the West, calls that led to the coordinated attacks last November in Paris that hit a concert hall, a stadium and restaurants and bars, leaving 130 people dead.

He was a Syrian who crossed the border and joined al-Qaida in Iraq after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

The powerful speaker went on to become the voice of the Islamic State group -- releasing lengthy audio files online containing fiery sermons in which he urged followers to kill civilians in countries that supported the U.S.-led coalition.
