WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department says it's disappointed with a ruling by the European Union that Apple will have to pay billions of dollars in back taxes to Ireland because it received illegal tax benefits for 11 years. The department said in a statement that retroactive tax assessments by the EU Commission "are unfair" and "contrary to well-established legal principles." Last week, the Treasury had accused the EU of using a different set of standards to judge cases involving American companies and called the effort "deeply troubling."
AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — Thirty-seven caskets will be on hand for today's state funeral being held in the quake-damaged Italian town of Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh). Many of the victims were tourists visiting the medieval hilltop town. They and others have been claimed by relatives and buried elsewhere or are awaiting private funeral services. A total of 231 people died in Amatrice in last week's quake, and 11 others in a nearby town. Fifty others died in the neighboring region.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Fire Department says two bodies have been found in the wreckage of a small plane that crashed into Lake Pontchartrain just north of the New Orleans Lakefront Airport. The plane was pulled from the water this morning by a crane and the aircraft was placed on a barge. A fire department spokesman says the bodies of the pilot and one passenger were in the plane's cabin. A woman survived Saturday night's crash and was picked up by a boat in the area.
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to outline his plan to overhaul the city agency that investigates police misconduct. The Chicago Tribune reports that members of the Chicago City Council were told Emanuel will introduce the measure today and hopes for a vote in two weeks. The mayor's plan comes as the city deals with the aftermath of a white Chicago police officer fatally shooting a black teenager 16 times in 2014. Officer Jason Van Dyke has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in Laquan McDonald's death.
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The governor of Maine says he plans to meet with a Democratic lawmaker to make amends for leaving an obscene rant on his voicemail that said, "I am after you." Republican Gov. Paul LePage tells a radio station (WVOM-FM) that his tirade was "unacceptable" and that it was "totally" his own fault. He says he's going to meet with family and close advisers to decide what to do next. He says he hopes Maine residents will forgive him and "move forward." LePage had been angry with Democratic Rep. Drew Gattine (gah-TEEN') because he thought Gattine called him a racist. Gattine denies it.
