MIAMI (AP) — A long stretch of North Carolina's Outer Banks is under a tropical storm warning. The area runs from Cape Lookout to Oregon Inlet. Forecasters expect the tropical depression that's about 140 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras to become a tropical storm by early tomorrow. It will likely bring heavy rains and high winds to the islands along North Carolina's coast. Meanwhile, a tropical depression about 195 miles west of Key West, Florida, is also expected to become a tropical storm by tomorrow.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Gene Wilder has died. A family member says Wilder died late yesterday at his home in Stamford, Connecticut, from complications from Alzheimer's disease. Wilder is being remembered for his collaborations with Mel Brooks in pictures like "Young Frankenstein." He also did four movies with comic Richard Pryor. Wilder was 83.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Defense Secretary Ash Carter says the U.S. has asked Turkey to "stay focused" on fighting against Islamic State extremists, not with Kurdish Syrian fighters. It was the first U.S. criticism of its NATO ally since it launched a U.S.-backed incursion into northern Syria to help Syrian rebels seize the town of Jarablus from the Islamic State group.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia school board is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to decide whether a transgender male must be allowed to use the boys bathroom at his high school. Lawyers for the Gloucester (GLAH'-stur) County School Board contend the case is an issue of national importance. A federal appeals court has ruled that the board's policy violates Title IX, a federal law that prohibits discrimination in schools.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Nashville judge has dismissed pop star Taylor Swift as a potential juror in an aggravated rape and kidnapping case. A spokesman for the Davidson County District Attorney General's Office says Swift told the judge that she was concerned because of an upcoming trial in Denver involving allegations she was groped by a fan at a meet-and-greet. Swift volunteered to serve on a jury in any other type of case but was dismissed.
