AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — Italian authorities have opened investigations into the massive destruction caused by last week's earthquake, to determine whether anyone bears criminal guilt for failing to ensure building safety standards in the seismically risky area. One of the buildings they'll look at is an elementary school in Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh) that crumbled when the quake hit. The school was renovated in 2012 to resist earthquakes. Meanwhile, authorities have revised the death toll down by one, to 290 people killed.

BERLIN (AP) — Germany's economy minister says free trade talks between the European Union and the United States have failed, though no one is admitting it. During a question-and-answer session with citizens in Berlin, he said that in 14 rounds of talks, the two sides haven't agreed on a single common item out of 27 chapters being discussed. The Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, faces strong popular opposition in Germany.

WARREN, Mich. (AP) — Hillary Clinton is invoking memories of her father's drapery business as she questions Donald Trump's economic record and promotes her small business plans. The Democratic presidential nominee has been talking about her dad on the campaign trail, recalling Hugh Rodham hard at work, printing curtains for hotels and office buildings. Clinton hopes to remind voters that despite her years in public life and substantial wealth, she comes from a middle class background and understands the life of a small business owner.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump is making a pitch to Iowa farmers. At an event yesterday in Des Moines, Trump promised to cut taxes on family farms, which he called the "backbone" of the country. He said Hillary Clinton will push regulations and high taxes that will hurt family farmers. Trump also said he's committed to continuing a requirement that all gasoline sold contain an ethanol-based additive, an issue important to corn growers.
