BEIRUT (AP) — Turkey-backed Syrian rebels seized a number of villages and towns from Kurdish-led forces in northern Syria on Sunday amid Turkish airstrikes and shelling that killed at least 35 people, mostly civilians, according to rebels and a monitoring group.

MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Gaston has reformed, gathering strength as it moves northwestward in the Atlantic. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Gaston reformed as a hurricane last night, clocking 85 mph winds. The storm was located about 655 miles east southeast of Bermuda. Gaston was moving at about 8 mph.

AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — Italian authorities have opened investigations into the massive destruction brought by the latest earthquake, seeking to determine if anyone bears criminal guilt for failing to ensure building safety standards in the area. The investigation will focus on a number of structures, including an elementary school that crumbled when the quake hit Wednesday. The school was renovated in 2012 to resist earthquakes at a cost of $785,000.

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani officials say four Islamic extremists allegedly involved in a 2009 attack on the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team have been killed in a shootout with police. The officials did not identify the militants or their armed group. The attack on the cricket team killed six police and two bystanders, and wounded six cricket players. The Pakistani Taliban and an affiliated extremist group claimed the attack, which was carried out by 10 gunmen.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A would-be suicide bomber is in police custody, under interrogagtion in Jakarta, Indonesia, after his explosives failed to detonate in a packed church during Sunday Mass. Police said the 8-year-old assailant injured a priest with an axe before being restrained.
