FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered a small fracture in his back during an exhibition game Thursday night with Seattle. Coach Jason Garrett says there is no timetable as to when the veteran signal caller will be able to return to the team and play. The 36-year-old Romo has had back surgery twice before.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick (KAP'-ur-nihk) has explained why he didn't stand during the playing of the national anthem before Friday night's game with Green Bay. He says he will continue to refuse to stand for the anthem because he believes the United States oppresses African Americans and other minorities. An NFL spokesman says players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem.
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke will have to do without starting quarterback Thomas Sirk this season. He reinjured an Achilles tendon in practice that he tore back in February. This is the third time since 2013 Sirk has suffered an injury to the Achilles.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Players on the Tennessee football team will wear a commemorative sticker on the back of their helmets this season to honor Pat Summitt, the late women's basketball coach at the school. Summitt died in late June after battling early-onset dementia, Alzheimer's type. Summitt led Tennessee to eight national titles in 38 seasons at Tennessee before stepping down in 2012, one year after she announced her diagnosis.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — IndyCar started a race in June at Texas Motor Speedway. It was rained out and tonight they will attempt to get the race in. Simon Pagenaud (PA'-zhen-oh) was the overall points leader at the time and still is, although only by 20 points now over Will Power.
